There was a time when you would see scarecrows on porches and next to lamp posts as an announcement that Fall had arrived. Not scary looking ones, but jolly ones that looked like they came out of The Wizard of Oz. I don't see many of those anymore and it makes me a little wistful.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see more creepy scarecrows take their place. These are dark times after all and a sinister scarecrow may just be what we need. Brian McCann has a good grasp on what I'm talking about. He likes to make Halloween props, but his miniature stick and clay scarecrows will send a shiver up your back and they'll fit on your desk.
