Susan Lenz: Cemetery Quilts

Susan Lenz works with needle and thread. She makes quilts, but also altered books, collages, and stained glass among other things. What caught my attention are Lenz's Grave Rubbing Quilts. Using silk and crayons Lenz visits cemeteries and makes grave rubbings directly on the cloth and then stitches over them. The quilts range in size from handkerchiefs to bed coverings. Full of detail, the finished works leave me wanting to know more. Who were the people in those graves and what were their stories?

Follow the link under each photo to read about the making of the piece.
