If You're Going to Wear A Spider Dress

If you're not technically inclined you may have missed the announcement of the one-of-a-kind Spider Dress by designer Anouk Wipprecht in collaboration with architect Philip H. Wilck of the Palermo Group and the New Devices Group at Intel at the beginning of the year. The dress uses Intel technology.

The dress has tiny sensors that monitor your body's biometrics. When it senses you are uncomfortable, the spider legs extend to give you more personal space. Sign me up!

Can you imagine wearing this on a crowded subway? Ha! In my opinion, the dress is not only practical, it is stunning. The bodice's delicate ribcage is gorgeous.

Wipprecht says "When approached at an aggressive pace, the system answers in a territorial attack mode, but when you walk up to the dress in a more cautious, friendly, symbolic way, you can almost get the dress to invite you closer, as if to dance with you."

Watch a video of the dress in action here.

There is an earlier version of the dress in black.

I find the combination of robotics and fashion fascinating.
