Every year I like to celebrate author Shirley Jackson on the anniversary of her death, August 8, 1965. Most people know her from her short story "The Lottery" which is awesome and was quite controversial when it was first published in
The New Yorker in 1948. Jackson's parents were appalled and many subscribers to the magazine cancelled their subscriptions in protest.
Then some people know that she wrote
The Haunting of Hill House, but don't really get it. They're not sure if it's a ghost story or a story about the decline of a woman's mental health (both in my opinion.) I actually like this novel quite a bit.
Then there it the novelette
We Have Always Lived in the Castle which is my absolute favorite (
read my post about it here.) Again, the horror is more psychological than ghostly, but the pacing is fantastic and leads to a bang up finish.
So today, in honor of Ms. Jackson, I have a few suggestions for her loyal fans.
Now, after you've set yourself up with the appropriate accessories, please go watch
We Have Always Lived in the Castle which was released this year. I thought the adaption was excellent.
