Gorey-esque

I'm thinking about Edward Gorey this week. He died on April 15, 2000. (note: um, I just realized this is March, not April, but let's go with it anyway.) I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate Gorey's macabre drawings- so whimspookal. His little books are a delight to read over and over again and someday (when I win the lottery) I'll start buying first editions.  Many have been inspired by Gorey and this week I have some art to show you that is Gorey-esque. By the way, if you haven't read Born to be Poshumous: The Eccentric Life and Mysterious Genius of Edward Gorey by Mark Dery, well, what are you waiting for?

The thing I find most lovable about Gorey is the way he fantasized the macabre but lived a quiet life at home with his cats. Something we can all aspire to.

    PS: My mind is also leaping ahead to April some days. I think it's because I'm eager to finally embrace springtime weather again. Winter started all the way back in mid-October here (effectively giving us only a month of autumn weather and foliage), and while I favour the cooler half of the year for many reasons, it will be a welcome treat to step outdoors again soon without the very real risk of frostbite and the need to shovel snow like we're training for an Olympic sport. ��

      I'm definitely wishing away March! I hate the wind blowing my hair every which (witch?) way. I call this the Miserable Season (Jan 15- April 15)- it's followed by the Lovely Season. So we'll be in the clear soon.

Gentleman Crow

This year I'm doing something different with the outside of our house for Halloween. After seeing a friend's photo of turkey vultures sitting on a fence, I decided this year our front porch would be a haven for ravens and crows. For the last few weekends my husband and I have been working on creating a door greeter. I call him the Gentleman Crow. He was easy-peasy to create. First we did a little research online on how to make the body form. We found lots of photos of pvc pipe body forms and my talented husband went to work on creating it. Although he didn't use the words easy-peasy, there was no swearing or cursing involved so I think it was pretty simple. Word of advice- don't glue anything together. You'll need to be able to take it apart to dress the form. The next step was shopping for a crow mask (there are many on the web to choose from) and clothes from thrift stores. Halloween Art Guide for Spellbound Collectors!

On the day that marks 100 days till Halloween, I am so excited to share with you a side project that I've been working on for 18 months with Kristen Stafford of Halloween Art & Travel podcast. I present to you our new website for Halloween art collectors. If you've been following my blog for a few years, you probably noticed I've posted less. Previously I had relied a great deal on Etsy to manage my favorite Halloween artist shops, but then Etsy turned corporate bullshit and all my favorite artists started leaving and scattered with the wind.
