Shudder

Have you heard about Shudder ? "Shudder is the diabolical new streaming service devoted exclusively to things that go bump in the night." That's from their website and I'm really intrigued. It costs $4.99 a month, but at the moment is only available in the U.S. -I'm sure that will change. Movies are grouped into collections, which I like because I'm not so much a blood-and-gore horror fan as I am an atmospheric horror fan. Some of the collections and their descriptions are: Haunted Habitations What scary secrets lurk behind that oh-so-inviting "For Sale" sign. The naive new tenants are about to find out. Psychos and Madmen The collection features unnerving stories of kooks, crazies, and creepy criminals who just won't seem to listen to reason. Socko Spoofs There's a thin line between comedy and horror, as these alternating hilarious and horrifying fright flicks demonstrate. Smart Slashers Foregoing the formulas, these...

First Moon Landing

Today, in 1969, man walked on the moon for the first time. At least, that's what we've been told (wink.) Even though we were finally forced to admit that the moon wasn't made of cheese, we've continued our fascination with this glowing orb. Halloween would lose a touch of glamour without the moon to guide our path and tell us secrets. Show the moon you love it by purchasing a little moon glow. Halloween at Grandinroad!

Oh my gosh, it's here already! The web store Grandin Road, a home decor site, has an awesome Halloween shop every year called Halloween Haven and I noticed this morning that the 2015 shop is now live. There is a new theme each year and this year's theme is "Into the Shadows." I'm so excited that I'm not going to post any images because I have to go look. Do yourself a favor by getting a delicious cup of coffee (or cocktail depending on when you read this) and settle down for a haunting browsing session. Go! What are you waiting for? It's all right here .

Skelly Chic

I just found Skelly Chic . I'm really excited about this! The artist behind the awesome skeleton creations is Leigh Hannan and she lives in Norwich, NY where I once worked (many, many moons ago). Hannan writes on her website " Skelly Chic combines my love of skeletons and an inherent need to live in color (life is too short for all white walls)!" I feel like I know her already. Beside the colorful website which includes a gallery of previous work, a demonstration of her process, and a blog, Hannan uses Etsy for her SkellyChic store . I encourage you to look around her website first before heading to shop. She has lots of fun extras there like wallpaper downloads. I almost forgot to mention that Skelly Chic also has a line of fabric on Spoonflower ! You'll want to check this out if you're planning on making some outfits for the Halloween season. I'm posting some items currently available at SkellyChic on Etsy where Hannan lists clay sculptures, prints, and ...

Halloween Treasure Studio Sale

I don't know if you're on the mailing list for Halloween Treasure Studio , but earlier this week artist Cali Lee sent out an announcement that there will be items for sale tomorrow, July 16th, at 6PM PST. Don't miss out on this one, even if it's just to window-shop. Lee creates vintage looking Halloween decor that she makes from found objects. She studied fine art in college, but her love for Halloween pulled her in a different direction. Here is a sample of her previous work. I can't wait to see what she will offer tomorrow! Halloween in Paper

Whenever I see artists creating altered books from vintage books, I think "that's what I should do with my old books!" Ha. That's not going to happen. So, I admire what Susan Hoerth of Raidersofthelostart can do with books. Hoerth calls them book autopsies and she'll make a custom book for you. Take a look. Edgar Allen Poe Wuthering Heights Edgar Allen Poe: The Cameo Edition Raidersofthelostart also has articulated paper dolls. They're so much fun! Plague Doctor Krampus Edgar Allen Poe H.P. Lovecraft

Frida Kahlo: Mexican Darling

Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo , died on July 13, 1954. Kahlo wasn't recognized as a significant painter till well after her death, but people have certainly made up for that in the last few years. There is now a cult-of-Kahlo that exists and you will often see her recognizable image (heavy eyebrows) portrayed in Day of the Dead artworks. If you haven't seen the movie Frida - watch it. Kahlo was a tortured, passionate woman who created brightly colored paintings that echoed her fervor. In celebration of Kahlo, I thought I'd show a few of the lovely works other artists have created in admiration of her.
