Brightly Colored Dark Art

One of the things I loved about the band The Smiths was their dark subjects overlaid with jangly pop tunes. That's what I admire in so many dark artists as well. Death may be a dark subject, but so many artists treated it lovingly, with bright colors and humor. They gently help us face the things that scares us.

Sonia Lazo (San Salvador, El Salvador) is an illustrator who makes spooky things seem downright cheerful. I dig her blocky style and pastel colors. It's all good. You can find her prints at Sonia Lazo Illustrator.
