Harold and Maude

I watched the movie Harold and Maude this past weekend. I hadn't seen it in probably 25 years. If I had described it from my 25 year memory I would have said it's about a young man and an old woman fixated on death who fall in love. I have a horrible memory. This movie is about life and living it to its fullest! Wow. This is a fantastic, funny movie that even the glummest goth can love. Sure, there is a focus on death, suicide, and funerals- all the things we love, but it's also about completing the circle of life. As I watched Harold evolve I was filled with elation. Ok, yes, I was drinking some wine while I watched it, but it really is a very joyful movie.

Ruth Gordon as Maude is perfectly cast. She is charming and lovable and dare I say sexy? By sexy I mean the self-confidence, warmth, and openness a person gives off. Maude is my new role model and that scares me.  Bud Cort as Harold is equally lovable. His tall, lanky physique is in stark contrast to small and round Gordon, but it's fun to watch his stiff demeanor become quite relaxed by the end of the film. Does anyone else think he looks like actor Topher Grace from That '70s Show?

If you've never seen this movie, watch it soon. If you haven't seen it in awhile, then watch it again. This movie is definitely in my list of top five favorites. If nothing else watch it for the fashion and hearses.

P.S. Impress your hip friends with a Harold and Maude poster in a foreign language.
